Throughout history, Brazil have produced some of the world’s greatest players with the majority of them plying their trade in the top flight of Brazil, the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A which is the pinnacle of domestic football in Brazil. One player who is making a big name for himself in the top flight is Internacional left back, Iago, who has become a key figure at the back for the Porto Alegre based side.
This season, Iago has cemented himself in Internacional’s first team as he has played in 18 of his sides 19 league games this season, playing 90 minutes in 17 of those games. To top it all off, Iago has also got himself 2 assists this season, the first coming in a 2-1 victory over Santos and the most recent one coming in a 3-0 victory over Fluminense that includes the deadly young striker Pedro, that shows how solid Iago has been that he can keep the top scorer quiet. Internacional currently sit second in Série A but are only 3 points off first placed Santos.
Iago has been with Internacional since he was just 16, playing for Monte Azul Paulista before that. He played with the youth team and bided his time until he would make his professional debut and his patience paid dividends when he made his debut in the opening game of the Série B season in a 3-0 victory over Londrina Esporte Clube, Iago made an 8 minute cameo. That season Iago would make just 1 more appearance, a 7 minute cameo in a 2-0 victory over Santa Cruz, but it was a very positive season for both Iago and Internacional as they were promoted back into Brazil’s top flight, finishing second and 2 point behind the champions América Mineiro.
Iago is a top Brazilian talent who has a big future and so when we got the opportunity to interview the player himself, we had to jump at the opportunity so enjoy:
Q1. How do you think your season has gone so far with Internacional?
A1 - I think it's good, I can keep a regularity, and always looking to improve some things
Q2. What differences have you noticed between the professional and youth levels?
A2 - At the Professional level you have to be strong mentally and know how to deal with pressure and make your game. In the base category did not have much pressure and depending on the championship did not have many high level teams and the professional charge is much higher
Q3. What setbacks have you faced on and off the pitch. How have you overcome these problems to become a better player?
A3 - When I left home very early to play for Internacional and the biggest of them was when I lost my father during a Copa São Paulo game
Q4. Where are your short and long term goals in your football career?
A4 - My goal is always to win.
Q5. What advice do you have to young defenders that aspire to be a professional player?
A5 - Always work, have patience and humility
We would like to thank Iago for taking the time to be a part of our interview, we would also like to thank everyone at Think Ball Sports & Consulting for making this all happen.
